City lots have no room for spoil, so nearly every load leaves from the alley. We haul to permitted sites and bring in stone, fill and topsoil for what stays.
Most Chicago lots have no room to keep dirt from a dig, so almost everything leaves by truck. We haul clay, old concrete, brick and debris to permitted sites, and sort clean concrete for recycling where we can. Soil mixed with ash or old debris is common on older lots, and it is handled and disposed of properly. Loads are weighed and tracked to the site that receives them.
We bring in what the job needs: crushed stone for slab and driveway base, clean fill for low areas, screened topsoil for lawns and gardens, and sand for pipe bedding. In Chicago clay, stone under a slab does the work that clean sand does in sandier places, keeping the slab from settling and draining water away from the base. Black dirt is kept for the top layer only.
Alleys are often the only way in and out, and they are narrow, busy and shared with neighbors and garbage trucks. We plan where trucks will park, keep the alley open as much as we can, protect garage aprons and keep the street and alley swept. Bigger hauls may need a permit to use the street. Each evening the alley is cleared of loose stone and mud.
Hauling & fill dirt in Chicago: common questions
Can you haul from the alley?
Yes. Many Chicago jobs load out of the alley, and we keep it passable as much as possible.
What stone goes under a garage slab?
Crushed stone with fines, compacted in layers, is the usual base. The plans or the city may set the thickness.
Do you take broken concrete?
Yes. We haul broken concrete, brick and debris, and recycle clean concrete where possible.
